OpenAI is developing a new code-hosting platform to rival Microsoft’s GitHub, according to The Information. The project is in early stages and likely will not be completed for months. Reuters could not independently verify the report.
The move signals a direct challenge to Microsoft, which holds a significant stake in OpenAI. If launched, the platform would mark a bold competitive step against a key investor and partner. It would also provide an alternative for developers facing service disruptions on GitHub.
Engineers from OpenAI encountered a rise in service disruptions that rendered GitHub unavailable in recent months. This prompted the decision to develop the new product, The Information reported, citing a person with knowledge of the project. Employees have considered making the code repository available for purchase to OpenAI’s customer base.
OpenAI, GitHub and Microsoft did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The Information first reported the news.
OpenAI’s latest funding round valued the company at $840 billion. Big Tech and SoftBank’s Masayoshi Son participated in a $110 billion raise. This signals continued AI investment despite recent fears of a valuation bubble.
