Google updated its Translate app to offer alternatives for idioms and colloquialisms using Gemini.

The update provides specific guidance on phrase usage to reduce confusion in cross-language communication. It is available now for Android and iOS users in the United States and India.

The app lists alternative phrases when users tap an arrow icon. It offers tips on when and why to use a different expression. This feature targets idioms that may not translate directly between languages.

Google included two new buttons for deeper interaction. The “Understand” button provides a detailed overview to answer questions. The “Ask” button allows users to ask follow-up questions for more information.

The company stated the experience will arrive on the web soon. Google did not disclose plans to expand the feature to other countries.

Google Translate is a free translation service that supports over 100 languages. The app is owned by Alphabet Inc., which trades under the ticker GOOGL.
