Mozilla released Firefox 148, adding five optional AI features to the browser. The update introduced a dedicated controls section allowing users to disable individual tools or block all current and future AI enhancements.
The release addresses user concerns regarding AI integration in browsers. Mozilla’s approach allows individuals to opt out of specific features while maintaining access to the browser’s core functionality, adhering to a previous commitment regarding user choice.
Firefox 148 includes five new AI capabilities. These are translations for web pages, alt text generation for PDFs, AI-enhanced tab grouping, link previews, and AI chatbot providers in the sidebar, according to the release notes.
Mozilla added a new “AI controls” section to the browser’s settings. Users can enable or disable individual features through this menu. A separate “Block AI enhancements” toggle disables all current AI features and blocks future prompts or additions.
This release follows a 2025 commitment made by Mozilla CEO Anthony Enzor-Demeo. Enzor-Demeo previously assured users that Firefox would provide a clear way to disable AI features, including a dedicated kill switch.
The update allows users to choose from existing chatbots in the sidebar, including Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, and Le Chat Mistral. Mozilla stated that these features are entirely optional for users.
