X is testing a new “collaborative notes” feature for Community Notes that enables human writers to request AI-written notes. The platform previously launched a pilot program last year allowing developers to create dedicated AI note writers. Keith Coleman, who oversees Community Notes, stated that these AI writers proved “prolific,” with one contributing more than 1,000 notes rated helpful by other contributors.
Under the new experiment, when an existing Community Note contributor requests a note on a post, the system automatically initiates a Collaborative Note drafted by AI. Contributors can then rate the note or suggest improvements. X explained, “Collaborative Notes can update over time as suggestions and ratings come in.” The system reviews incoming input to determine if a new version represents a meaningful improvement, aiming to make the note as helpful as possible.
Coleman confirmed toı Karissa Bell that Grok will serve as the AI writer for these collaborative notes. This choice aligns with user habits on X, where people often invoke the AI in threads with phrases like “@grok is this true?” Coleman added that “if it works well, it could make sense to bring the suggestion-feedback loop to the AI note writer API as well.”
Community Notes has faced criticism for slow publication speeds, and incorporating AI seeks to accelerate the process. Coleman also highlighted that the update introduces “a new way to make models smarter in the process (continuous learning from community feedback).”
Initially, only Community Note contributors with “top writer” status can initiate collaborative notes, though X plans to expand access over time. The company shared these details amid ongoing efforts to refine the feature.
