Sony has shipped 92.2 million PlayStation 5 consoles worldwide. In its latest earnings report, the company shipped 8 million PS5 units during the third quarter, a decline of 1.5 million units or 16 percent from the 9.5 million units sold in the same period last year.

The gaming division reported higher profits despite the hardware sales drop, driven by increased software sales and a weaker yen. Sony noted PS5 sales rose in the first two quarters of the fiscal year, making the holiday-season decline unexpected. Last year’s third-quarter sales of 9.5 million units marked the strongest period since the console launched in November 2020.

Software sales reached 97.2 million games in the third quarter, up from 95.9 million the previous year. Digital sales accounted for 76 percent of total software sales, a 2 percentage point increase year-over-year. Sony also recorded 132 million monthly active users on the PlayStation Network, a new high.

Upcoming PS5 titles include Resident Evil Requiem on February 27, Avowed on February 17, and Bungie’s Marathon on March 5.

The PS4 lasted seven years before replacement. Analysts expect the PS5 to have a longer life cycle, citing continued strong sales, high RAM prices, and recent hardware updates. The PS6 could deliver roughly triple the performance of the PS5.
