Spotify has begun rolling out group chats this week, following the launch of its one-on-one messaging feature last August. Users can now share podcasts, playlists, and audiobooks with up to 10 people in a group chat.
A chat can only be started with someone with whom a user has previously shared content. Eligible contacts include collaborators on a playlist, participants in a Jam session, or those involved in a Blend.
The rollout forms part of Spotify’s efforts to add more social functionality to its streaming app. Over the years, the company has introduced features such as comments on podcasts, the ability to follow other users, and options to see what they are listening to.
Spotify has advised users to continue sharing content outside the app, as the messaging tools are designed to complement those practices. Messages receive encryption at rest and in transit, but they do not use end-to-end encryption.
