Bluesky has outlined its 2026 roadmap, prioritizing improvements to its algorithmic Discover feed, enhanced follow recommendations, a more real-time experience, and additional features. The company also acknowledged the need to strengthen core functionalities.

The platform launched publicly in early 2024 following an invite-only phase and grew to over 42 million users, based on data from the Bluesky API for developers. Bluesky sets itself apart from platforms like X and Threads through custom feeds and user-configurable algorithms. However, it trails competitors in essential features, including private accounts, drafts, and support for longer videos.

Head of Product Alex Benzer addressed these gaps in a post on the company’s website. He stated that the “basics need to be solid” before users will remain engaged. These comments follow a decline in usage, with daily active users dropping 40 percent year-over-year as of October 2025, according to Similarweb data reported by Forbes.

Benzer specified several areas for improvement. The composer tool requires better media handling, and the current three-minute video limit falls short. Video uploads need to be faster, and the app should support posting more than four photos simultaneously. He also called for simpler thread creation and added draft functionality.
