Google has resolved Gmail issues involving spam detection and email misclassification that began around 5 a.m. Pacific Time on Saturday morning. Users reported emails typically directed to Promotions, Social, or Updates folders appearing in their Primary inboxes. Spam warnings also surfaced on messages from known senders.
Social media complaints highlighted spam landing directly in inboxes, with one user stating “all the spam is going directly to my inbox” and another noting Gmail’s filters seemed “suddenly completely busted.”
Google’s Workspace status dashboard provided updates throughout Saturday, confirming the company was addressing “misclassification of emails in their inbox and additional spam warnings.” That evening, Google announced the issue was “fully resolved for all users.”
A dashboard update specified that some Gmail users experienced email misclassification in their inbox and delays in receiving email. It added that “misclassified spam warnings from the incident may persist for existing messages received before the issue resolution.”
Google stated it will “publish an analysis of this incident once we have completed our internal investigation.” This report was first published on January 24, 2026, and updated to include Google’s resolution statement.
