Meta’s Threads now hosts more daily mobile users than Elon Musk’s X, according to data from market intelligence firm Similarweb, as Threads’ mobile app for iOS and Android has shown consistent growth.

Similarweb data, updated on January 7, 2026, indicates Threads recorded 141.5 million daily active users on iOS and Android. X, in contrast, registered 125 million daily active users on mobile devices.

This growth for Threads appears to reflect sustained trends rather than recent controversies surrounding X. Recent events involved X’s integrated AI, Grok, being used to create non-consensual nude images. These incidents have prompted California’s attorney general to initiate an investigation into Grok, with similar probes underway in the UK, EU, India, and Brazil.

The issues on X also correlated with an increase in app installations for the social networking startup Bluesky.

Threads’ heightened mobile user engagement may stem from cross-promotions on Meta platforms like Facebook and Instagram, a focus on creators, and the regular deployment of new features. Threads has implemented interest-based communities, enhanced filters, direct messages, long-form text, and disappearing posts. Testing for games has also been observed.

These increases in daily active users indicate a more habitual mobile usage pattern for Threads.

Meta’s official figures in August 2025 reported Threads exceeding 400 million monthly active users. The company subsequently announced 150 million daily active users for Threads in October 2025.

Growth trends have persisted over several months. Last summer, Similarweb noted Threads narrowing the gap with X on mobile, following 127.8% year-over-year growth as of late June 2025.

In the U.S., X maintains a lead over Threads, though this gap is diminishing. A year prior, X had double the number of daily active users in the U.S. compared to its current figures.

X retains a stable web audience. Similarweb data show X with approximately 150 million daily web visits. As of January 13, 2026, X recorded 145.4 million daily web visits, contrasting with Threads’ 8.5 million daily web visits across Threads.com and Threads.net combined.
