Waze is testing traffic light indicators on its navigation maps in Israel, marking progress on a long-requested feature. The crowdsourced app, which emphasizes real-time driving conditions, trails Google Maps, which added traffic light support in 2022.
The testing, reported by GeekTime based on a tip, remains in early stages with strict display limits to prevent map clutter. During active navigation, Waze shows a maximum of three traffic lights at a time. This approach keeps the interface focused for drivers. When the map is open without active navigation, the app displays all traffic lights near the user’s current location.
Waze confirmed in May that traffic light support is planned. No details exist on expanding the test within Israel or to other countries. Display limits could adjust as development advances.
Google’s ownership of Waze opens possibilities to use Google Maps’ existing traffic light data, already mapped in places like the United States. Building this from scratch would otherwise take more time.
Israel serves as the initial test location. The feature addresses years of user requests. Waze users outside the test await full availability, while Google Maps provides the capability now.
