Apple is upgrading its Maps application in iOS 26 by integrating Apple Intelligence into the search function. This enhancement is designed to make the app’s search capabilities more effective by allowing users to input natural language queries. While iOS 26 introduces several new features to Maps, the improved search is identified as a significant update to one of the app’s core functions.
This integration of AI-powered search follows a similar pattern seen in other Apple applications. Previously, Apple enhanced the search features in the Photos app, followed by upgrades to Apple Music and the TV app. With iOS 26, Maps becomes the latest native app to receive this search infusion.
The feature does not operate as a separate or special mode within Maps. On devices that support Apple Intelligence, the technology works in the background to improve all searches. Users on iOS 26 may see a popup with the heading, “Search the Way You Talk,” which provides an example: “Use natural language for searches like ‘Find cafes with free Wi‑Fi.’”
The capability to process these more complex requests stems from Apple applying the same AI language tools that drive other system features. These tools are also used for generating notification summaries, categorizing emails in the Mail app, and providing Smart Replies.
A test conducted during the iOS 26 beta period illustrates the improvement. The query “Coffee shops near Disney World that have Wi‑Fi” was entered into Maps. The report notes that while this complex search would have been problematic for Maps in iOS 18, the updated version with Apple Intelligence successfully understood the user’s intent and delivered the correct results.
