Nikon has introduced the ZR, its first co-branded camera with RED, the cinema camera company Nikon acquired in April of the previous year. This move signals Nikon’s integration with RED in the compact cinema camera market.
The Nikon ZR builds upon Nikon’s existing strengths, incorporating its Z-mount, internal RAW video recording, and color science, while enhancing features for video users, most notably the ability to record RED R3D NE files. These files provide post-production flexibility, allowing adjustments to settings like ISO and white balance, simplifying color matching with existing RED footage.
Based on the Nikon Z6III, the ZR features a partially-stacked 24MP full-frame sensor, 7.5 stops of IBIS, and a dynamic range exceeding 15 stops. The camera’s body is more compact than the Z6III, measuring 133 × 80.5 × 48.7 mm. Additional video-centric features include 32-bit audio output from the hotshoe, a mic jack, and a 4-inch articulating touchscreen with 1,000 nits brightness.
The Nikon ZR will retail for $2,199 and will be available starting October 20th.
