Nintendo’s Switch 2 console set a new industry record by selling 5.82 million units globally by the end of June, less than one month after its launch. This figure significantly surpasses the original Switch’s first-month sales of 2.7 million units, with the console exceeding 3.5 million units sold in its initial week alone.
Demand continues to outstrip supply “in many countries,” prompting Nintendo to apologize for inconvenience and pledge production increases. The unprecedented launch has cemented the Switch 2 as the fastest-selling game console in history. This success fueled Nintendo’s financial performance, driving Q2 (April-June) revenue to $3.8 billion – a 132% surge compared to the $1.6 billion reported in the same quarter last year.
Nintendo forecasts selling 15 million Switch 2 units by the end of March next year. However, a potential challenge emerged as the US announced a new 20% tariff on imports from Vietnam, doubling the previous rate. Vietnam is the manufacturing base for the Switch 2, raising questions about future pricing or supply impacts.
