Microsoft is set to launch a new 5G version of its Surface Laptop, with shipments commencing on August 26th. The device, primarily aimed at businesses, will start at a price of $1,799.99.

The Surface Laptop 5G is powered by Intel’s Core Ultra Series 2 processors, which include a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) to facilitate Microsoft’s latest Copilot Plus AI features. While sharing a strong resemblance to the existing 13.8-inch Surface Laptop 7 model, the 5G variant incorporates internal modifications to integrate a 5G modem. It supports both a physical nano SIM and eSIMs for connectivity.

The base configuration of the Surface Laptop 5G, priced at $1,799, will come with an Intel Core Ultra 5 processor, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. The top-tier model, retailing for $2,699, will feature an Intel Core Ultra 7 processor, 32GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage. All configurations will be available in the Surface platinum silver color.

A significant innovation in the Surface Laptop 5G is its dynamic antenna system. According to Nancie Gaskill, general manager of the Surface business, this system utilizes six antennas that continuously adapt to the laptop’s environment and how it is being held or used. Gaskill stated, “At the heart of Surface Laptop 5G is a dynamic antenna system that continuously adapts to its environment.” She also highlighted the development of a new material for this system: “This design required a new material, one that allows radio signals to pass through without impacting performance, while still delivering the durability, premium feel and lightness our customers are looking for. We developed a custom multi-layered laminate that meets all of these needs, enabling reliable 5G performance without compromising portability or design.”

Microsoft has rigorously tested the 5G hardware with over 100 mobile operators across more than 50 countries. This extensive testing ensures reliable 5G performance, allowing the laptop to maintain constant connectivity on the go. Furthermore, the device can function as a 5G mobile hotspot, enabling users to share its internet connection with other devices via Wi-Fi.

In addition to the Surface Laptop 5G, businesses will also gain access to the latest Surface Laptop 13-inch and Surface Pro 12-inch models starting from today.
