PayPal, including its Venmo platform, is rolling out a new AI-powered scam alert system globally to combat increasingly sophisticated fraud. This initiative aims to protect users by leveraging advanced AI to detect and prevent scams, particularly for “Friends and Family” transactions.

According to Yigit Yildirim, SVP of global fraud prevention at PayPal, “We need to be smarter and faster than the scammers, and we’re combating AI used by bad actors with more intelligent AI used for good.” The system provides dynamic warnings, with higher-risk transactions triggering more restrictive actions, even blocking payments in cases of high confidence of a scam. Lower-risk alerts may encourage users to verify safety.

The AI models continuously learn from billions of data points, adapting to new scam types even if not specifically trained on them. This allows the system to identify novel fraud patterns by understanding similarities between known and emerging scams, storing this new information for future detection efforts.
