Instagram, the platform built on sharing your life with everyone and their dog (literally, sometimes!), is testing a new feature that might turn up the heat on exclusivity: “Friend Stories”.

This option, currently in limited trials, allows you to create stories visible only to a specific group of your followers, chosen by you.

Instagram Friends Stories are beyond the public eye

Public Instagram Stories can feel like a highlight reel, showcasing carefully crafted snippets of our lives. But what about the everyday moments, the silly jokes shared with close friends, the candid glimpses into our real selves?

The “Close Friends” feature aims to address this disconnect by providing a safe space for sharing these raw, unfiltered moments with a chosen group.

Instagram already offers the “Close Friends” list, allowing users to curate a smaller circle for more personal posts. This new feature takes it a step further by letting users create Stories exclusively for this list.

You can imagine sharing funny selfies with your squad, behind-the-scenes snippets from an event, or just casual updates on your day, all without the pressure of performing for a wider audience.

A whole new way

This collaborative storytelling could be a game-changer. Imagine:

  • Boosting engagement: Share your content with a wider audience, riding the wave of your friend’s followers
  • Deepening connections: Create something together, add your unique perspectives, and build stronger bonds
  • Elevating your game: Combine your creative juices, learn from each other, and level up your storytelling skills

And the possibilities don’t stop there. Imagine brands using this feature to spark user-generated content (UGC). They could prompt their fans to create stories around a theme or challenge, and then feature the best ones on their own profile. Talk about a win-win!

When can you get your hands on it?

Instagram has confirmed this feature is in the testing phase, so don’t get your hopes up just yet. But with the platform’s commitment to social interaction and Adam Mosseri’s focus on keeping Instagram a vibrant community, we might see “Friend’s Story” take center stage soon.
