Xiaomi uses its new Mi MIX liquid chamber lenses, so we tell you what these liquid camera lenses are and the advantages they offer in this article.

The Xiaomi Mi MIX range will finally return to the market, after years of absence worldwide. The announcement of the return of this device confirmed its position as an innovative mobile, thanks to the use of liquid camera lenses. This concept has generated many doubts because it is something we have not seen in the market so far.

What are liquid camera lenses, how do they differ from other sensors and how are they better? These are questions that many people have after this Xiaomi Mi MIX announcement. These types of lenses have been in development for a while and there have been rumors about various Android phones that were going to use them, but Xiaomi’s is the first.

What are liquid chamber lenses?

Traditional camera lenses are made of glass and their focal length depends on the material it is made of and the radius of curvature. Liquid camera lenses are composed of a liquid that can change shape at a rapid rate, thus allowing you to change the focal length at will. This type of lens can focus on near and far objects in a matter of milliseconds, which is why they are an ideal choice for smartphones.

In the case of Xiaomi, their idea behind using a liquid lens is that it allows them to use the same camera for different purposes. A liquid layer is used on the lens, a material that can be molded, allowing the camera to have different uses. The brand has opted for a proprietary development of the camera.

Xiaomi has developed a system capable of manipulating this liquid lens to act as a telephoto and macro camera. Combining these sensors allows to reduce the space in the camera module and, according to the brand, better and brighter photos are obtained. This combination makes it a bright lens, with a very low level of light dispersion and resistance to extreme environments.

The use of liquid camera lenses in a smartphone provides many advantages over traditional optical lenses, something that a brand like Xiaomi has taken into account when employing them in its new smartphone. The main advantages that their use provide are:

  • A more compact camera module: The telephoto sensor is smaller in this case, although it is capable of taking macro images. The module thus takes up less space.
  • A better focus: The focus becomes faster and more precise, which will allow better photos to be taken more quickly.
  • Brighter photos: The level of light scattering is extremely low, resulting in brighter photos.
