Google is seeking additional hardware partners to create devices utilizing its Gemini for Home technology, which it has rebranded as a “full-stack AI” offering. This integration combines Google Home APIs with Gemini’s features, allowing companies to expedite the development of AI-enabled hardware.
The company is expanding the Google Home Gemini built-in program to help partners avoid the lengthy multi-year research and development phase traditionally associated with AI hardware. Google is providing access to validated scalable reference designs, including System on Chips (SOCs), sensors, and microphones developed by its partners. Companies can leverage these designs to design, mass produce, and launch smart cameras and speakers equipped with Gemini controls.
Google is also encouraging carriers, internet service providers (ISPs), and security firms to integrate their devices with the Google Home Premium AI subscription service using the reference designs. This subscription enables partners to offer features such as Home Brief, which summarizes home activities while users are away, and advanced deterrents that simulate presence in unoccupied homes.
The Google Home Premium service, previously known as Nest Aware, is priced starting at $10 per month or $100 annually for the standard tier, with an advanced option available at double that cost. Users subscribed to the $20 monthly AI Pro subscription have standard access included, while those with $250-per-month Ultra subscriptions receive the advanced tier.
Google has been gradually introducing Gemini across its product offerings and redesigned its Home app to prioritize the AI assistant, which was released globally last year. The updated app includes an “Ask Home” button that users can select to interact with Gemini. However, this prompts users to sign up for the AI experience rather than using the traditional Google Assistant.
The expansion of Google’s program is expected to lead to an increase in the availability of Gemini-powered devices in the market. Users who prefer not to use Gemini have the option of utilizing Home Assistant or Apple HomeKit for their home automation needs and can follow instructions to remove Gemini integration from their Google apps.
