Google is testing an expansion of its Pixel-exclusive AI Enhance feature in the Google Photos app, dividing it into two variants: AI Enhance I and AI Enhance II.
This change aims to reduce choice fatigue for users, as AI Enhance I will generate a single output image, while AI Enhance II will continue to provide three options. The update may also reduce computational requirements for Google.
Despite AI Enhance I producing only one image, users have not reported faster performance compared to the original three-image process. The new variants are currently being tested with a limited group of users, including a Telegram user who first reported the changes.
The existing AI Enhance feature, now rebranded as AI Enhance II, offers enhanced photo editing capabilities, including automatic cropping and color adjustments. As of now, the updated features have not been widely released, and the author of the report does not have access to them.
Reverse-engineering of version 7.69.0.890655694 of the Google Photos app shows an interface reflecting the changes. No significant differences in image quality have been observed between the outputs of AI Enhance I and AI Enhance II, leading to speculation about Google’s motivation for the update.
