Google is starting to roll out a new Audio Summaries feature in Google Docs, powered by Gemini. The idea is simple: instead of reading a long document (or listening to the whole thing), you can play a short AI-generated overview. Google says availability will be gradual, so the option may not show up for everyone right away.
According to Google Workspace Updates, Audio Summaries is meant to help you get up to speed quickly when a doc is too long to skim. This is part of Google’s broader push to add Gemini features across Workspace apps. The rollout is currently limited to specific paid tiers.
Google says the feature will be available for users on Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, and certain Gemini add-ons. That includes Google AI Ultra for Business, Google AI Pro for Education, and the Google AI Pro and Ultra plans.
If you have access, you’ll find it in Google Docs under Tools → Audio → “Listen to document summary.” From there, you can pick different voices (such as Narrator, Educator, or Teacher) and change playback speed. There’s also a “Listen to this tab” option if you want full document audio instead of an AI summary.
The feature was first spotted in testing last year, but Google is now finally shipping it. If you don’t see the new Audio menu yet, you may need to wait a few weeks as the rollout expands to more eligible accounts.
