Meta confirmed to TechCrunch on Thursday that it is testing a stand-alone Vibes app. Vibes launched last September as a feature within the Meta AI app, allowing users to create and share short-form AI-generated videos and view a dedicated feed of AI videos from others. The feed previously existed only inside the Meta AI app. The stand-alone version positions Vibes as a direct competitor to OpenAI’s Sora, an AI-generated video and social app that launched shortly after Vibes.

“Following the strong early traction of Vibes within Meta AI, we are testing a standalone app to build on that momentum,” Meta said in an emailed statement. “We’ve seen that users are increasingly leaning into the format to create, discover, and share AI-generated video with friends. This standalone app provides a dedicated home for that experience, offering people a more focused and immersive environment. We will look to expand the app further based on what we learn from the community.”

The news was first reported by Platformer. Meta does not share specific numbers but states that Vibes has performed well. Meta AI usage has continued to grow steadily since the launch, which the company views as a signal of demand for a stand-alone app. A dedicated app offers a more focused environment for video creation and engagement compared to the broader Meta AI app.

Vibes enables users to generate videos from scratch or remix videos from the feed. Before publishing, users can add visuals, layer in music, and adjust styles. Videos can then post directly to the Vibes feed, send via direct message to others, or cross-post to Instagram and Facebook Stories and Reels.

Meta reports rising collaboration and sharing, with many Vibes videos messaged to friends. This pattern mirrors user behavior with Reels.

Last week, Meta told TechCrunch it will test premium subscriptions across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The company also plans to explore subscriptions for AI features, including Vibes. Vibes has been free since launch, but Meta intends to introduce freemium access. Subscribers will unlock additional video-creation opportunities each month. Test subscriptions are slated to launch in the coming months.
