Amazon plans a second round of corporate job cuts impacting multiple units next week, confidential sources indicate, as the company targets a reduction of approximately 30,000 corporate workers.
The company previously eliminated about 14,000 white-collar positions in October. The upcoming layoffs are expected to affect a similar number of employees and could commence as early as Tuesday, according to two individuals familiar with the matter. An Amazon spokesperson declined to comment.
Units expected to be impacted include Amazon Web Services, retail, Prime Video, and human resources, the latter known internally as People Experience and Technology. The full scope of the reductions remains undetermined, and the sources cautioned that plans are subject to change.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy stated during the company’s third-quarter earnings call that job reductions were driven by company culture, specifically “too much bureaucracy,” rather than financial imperatives or artificial intelligence advancements. Jassy noted, “You end up with a lot more people than what you had before, and you end up with a lot more layers.”
An internal letter preceding the October cuts connected the reductions to AI, stating, “this generation of AI is the most transformative technology we’ve seen since the Internet, and it’s enabling companies to innovate much faster than ever before.” Jassy had also indicated in 2025 that Amazon’s corporate workforce would likely decrease due to AI-driven efficiencies.
Corporations are increasingly employing AI for software code generation and task automation to reduce costs and dependence on human labor. Amazon highlighted its latest AI models at its annual AWS cloud computing conference in December.
The targeted 30,000 job cuts represent a fraction of Amazon’s total 1.58 million employees, but nearly 10% of its corporate workforce. The majority of Amazon’s staff operates in fulfillment centers and warehouses. This will mark the largest layoff in Amazon’s history, surpassing the approximately 27,000 jobs trimmed in 2022.
Workers laid off in October were informed they would receive salary for 90 days, during which they could pursue internal positions or external employment. This 90-day period concludes on Monday.
