Google Workspace now supports direct editing of password-protected Microsoft Office files within Docs, Sheets, and Slides, eliminating prior download requirements for users.

This update facilitates full compatibility between Microsoft Office password-protected files and Google Workspace. Previously, users were required to download these files and utilize alternative software for access. Google’s integration allows users to input passwords, then proceed to view-only or edit modes.

The development aligns with an observable trend towards improved interoperability and efforts to mitigate vendor lock-in. This enhancement is available to all Google Workspace customers, including individuals, not exclusively businesses.

Google stated in its update blog post, “Prior to this, users would have to download and rely on third party applications to remove passwords or edit password protected Microsoft files.”

The feature’s rollout has commenced, though some domains may not receive access until January 2026. Google has also recently focused on simplifying data migration for businesses from Dropbox and SharePoint to further address vendor lock-in.
