A remaster of 2008’s Fallout 3, first leaked in 2023, is still in active development, according to a new report that links the project to Bethesda’s wider plans for the Fallout franchise and its release schedule for upcoming role-playing games.
Video Games Chronicle (VGC) reports that Fallout 3 Remastered is among the “other things” Bethesda is working on, following comments from Bethesda Game Studios director Todd Howard in a recent GQ interview. In that interview, Howard confirmed that The Elder Scrolls 6 remains “some way off” and referenced additional Fallout-related projects without providing specifics. According to VGC, the Fallout 3 remaster is being developed in a similar manner to this year’s The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, suggesting a comparable treatment and scope.
The report surfaces amid ongoing community speculation that Bethesda will revisit classic Fallout titles to sustain interest while work continues on The Elder Scrolls 6 and, eventually, Fallout 5. Expectations intensified around Fallout Day 2025, an annual event for franchise announcements, where many fans had anticipated formal confirmation of one or more remasters.
Fallout Day 2025 concluded without the reveal of a new mainline Fallout game or any confirmed remaster projects. Instead, Bethesda announced a new version of Fallout 4, a Fallout: New Vegas bundle, and additional content updates for Fallout Shelter and Fallout 76. The absence of a remaster announcement prompted disappointment among some viewers. At the end of the broadcast, Howard acknowledged those reactions and stated that Bethesda was working on “even more” Fallout, a remark now viewed as consistent with the reported continuation of the Fallout 3 remaster.
Attention has also focused on the possibility of a Fallout: New Vegas remaster. Ahead of Fallout Day, actor Danny Trejo, who voiced ghoul companion Raul Alfonso Tejada in the original game, publicly urged Bethesda to remaster Fallout: New Vegas. His call echoed a broader fan demand, heightened by renewed interest in the series following the successful Fallout television adaptation on Prime Video, which is scheduled to move its story to New Vegas for Season 2 in December.
While remaster projects appear to be part of Bethesda’s near-term strategy, the studio has reiterated that Fallout 5 will not enter the spotlight until after The Elder Scrolls 6. The most recent public comment on Fallout 5 came in June 2024, when Howard, speaking with YouTube creator MrMattyPlays, emphasized that the team does not intend to accelerate development timelines. “For other Fallout games in the future, you know, obviously I can’t talk about those right now, but I would say, sort of rushing through them, or we kind of need to get stuff out that is different than the work we’re doing in 76… we don’t feel like we need to rush any of that,” he said, adding that the Fallout TV show “fills a certain niche in terms of the franchise and storytelling.”
The last mainline entry, Fallout 4, launched in 2015 and received an Anniversary Edition release this week. Fallout 76, released in 2018 as a multiplayer-focused title set in West Virginia, has built a steady player base, with engagement increasing significantly after the debut of the Fallout TV series.
