Developer Vedinad announced that its game Megabonk has sold more than one million copies on Steam. The sales milestone was reached within two weeks of the game’s release. Data from Video Game Insights (VGI) estimates total sales are closer to 1.3 million units. The game also recorded a peak concurrent player count of over 117,000 on the platform.

Megabonk is a rogue-like survival game that uses low-polygon graphics to create a 3D experience similar to the 2D game Vampire Survivors, which was named a game of the year for 2022 by Marie Delassandri of GamesIndustry.biz. Megabonk features a distinct character roster, which includes a skeleton on a skateboard wearing sunglasses.

The success of Megabonk is part of a trend for games inspired by Vampire Survivors. According to VGI, Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor, which incorporates mining mechanics, has sold approximately 1.2 million copies. Another title, Soulstone Survivors, was released from Early Access in June and maintains around 123,000 monthly active users. Its creator, Allan Smith, reportedly worked 20-hour days to release the game quickly.

Player data from VGI shows significant audience overlap with related titles. About 62.5% of Megabonk players also own Vampire Survivors. The data also indicates a 63.2% ownership crossover with the game Warframe and 64.1% with Risk of Rain 2.

At the time of writing, Megabonk is ranked fifth on Steam’s top-seller charts, positioned just behind EA Sports FC 26. It holds a “very positive” rating on the platform, based on more than 19,000 user reviews. Other games have also experienced rapid success on Steam this year. The simulator Schedule I reached the top of the charts in March, and the game Peak sold two million copies in nine days.
