X has announced an experiment designed to identify and potentially highlight posts that are liked by individuals with opposing viewpoints. The platform revealed the initiative on Thursday, stating it will utilize its crowdsourced Community Notes feature for the test.
Beginning on Thursday, a select group of Community Notes contributors will participate in the experiment. They will be prompted to rate and provide feedback on specific posts. These prompts will appear based on the initial Like activity of the post.
X stated that the feedback gathered from contributors will be used to develop an open-source algorithm. The goal of this algorithm is to identify posts that resonate with users holding diverse perspectives. Contributors will share what they like and dislike about a post, with feedback options including “I learned something interesting” or “I don’t agree with it.”
“People often feel the world is divided, yet Community Notes shows people can agree, even on contentious topics,” X said in a post. “This experimental new feature seeks to uncover ideas, insights, and opinions that bridge perspectives.”
Community Notes was launched on X in 2022 following Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform. The feature has since been adopted by Meta’s social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.
