Apple plans to release a major update for visionOS 3 at WWDC this year, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Despite not launching a new Vision Pro model in 2025, Apple continues its investment in software updates for the headset.
visionOS 3 update and hardware plans
Gurman reports a second-generation Vision Pro with a new M-series chip and cheaper versions of the headset are still in development, but neither will be released in 2025. The current Vision Pro model still utilizes the M2 chip, which was introduced in 2022 and will be four years old by the next refresh.
In March, Apple introduced the visionOS 2.4 beta, which included new AI features for the headset and a Vision Pro app for iPhone. The update also introduced the Spatial Gallery, which is set to launch to the public in April. Gurman noted that visionOS 3 will serve as a significant upgrade, although he provided few specific details about its features.
Currently, the Vision Pro headset has not performed well commercially, leading Apple to reconsider its investments in this product line. The company is reassessing its strategy and shifting resources towards developing more appealing form factors. While enhancing hardware remains an option, the focus is on making visionOS robust.
Earlier this year, Apple explored creating augmented reality glasses that could function as an external display for Macs, but this concept was abandoned. The company is now working on standalone AR glasses that would be lightweight and designed for all-day wear. This project may require another three to five years to achieve practical results.
Apple is also evaluating the production of its version of popular AR glasses like those from Meta Platforms Inc., although these would not be full AR devices. This potential glasses product would integrate AI, microphones, and cameras to enhance user experience. The integration with iPhone and high-quality audio similar to AirPods could make these glasses a successful product in the market.
Apple is developing a product that merges AirPods functionality with cameras. These cameras could enable AI features by capturing data about the user’s environment, which relies on advancements in Apple’s AI capabilities.
iOS 18.4 beta features
Alongside the visionOS updates, Apple recently released the second beta version of iOS 18.4. A notable addition is the Vision Pro app, which operates similarly to the Apple Watch app. However, it differs by not allowing device customization; instead, it directs users to new features and apps while displaying their Vision Pro details.
The iOS 18.4 update also features an enhanced Vision Pro guest mode, allowing users to set it up on their iPhones without needing to wear the headset. In visionOS 2.4, the Spatial Gallery debuted with limited content, which includes contributions from Red Bull, Apple, and independent photographers, with plans for expansion before its public release in April.
Additionally, iOS 18.4 introduces a feature for the iPhone 15 Pro allowing users to trigger Visual Intelligence through the Action button or the Control Center. This feature aims to provide more detailed information about images captured with the camera; however, it has received mixed reviews concerning its overall effectiveness, often compared to Google Lens.
It has been confirmed that no new Vision Pro model will be released in 2025. Apple is reassessing its approach for future headsets while continuing to provide updates for the existing Vision Pro, which relies on older technology.
