Android 15 release date is today and Google just confirmed it

Android 15 has finally hatched from its beta egg, with Google accidentally spilling the beans. Like a digital migration, Pixel devices are first in line for this OS update, with other brands following suit.

Rumors had been swirling about the Android 15 release date for weeks, predicting mid-October. Leaked dates revealed Pixel devices would get their next significant update by October 15, 2024. And today, Google accidentally tipped the news when it spilled Android 15’s rollout on its German Pixel Community forum: Android 15 is indeed rolling out today.

As soon as it touched code with the release of the source code to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) in early September, we started hearing all kinds of buzz about Android 15. But, as Google fans would realize, Pixel was not yet over the air. Then, mid-September leaks started fueling speculation that the October 15 release was even closer.

Android 15 release date is here and which devices will get it?

While Google hasn’t officially announced the news yet, the search engine giant has confirmed it. Instead, Google announced that Android 15 is rolling out to supported devices today, courtesy of an early post on Google’s German Pixel forum. Screenshots of the announcement quickly circulated online, cementing what most people had been expecting for weeks.

For Pixel owners, today is the day you’ve been waiting for. Today is the update day for Android 15; it’s confirmed, but as usual, it is a gradual pace. Pixels locked to carriers will get the update over the next week, while unlocked models will have the update first. According to Google’s past releases, we should expect the OTA update and factory images a few hours after 10 a.m. PT today.

Here’s a list of Pixel devices expected to receive the Android 15 update:

  • Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a
  • Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a
  • Pixel 8, 8 Pro, 8a
  • Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold
  • Pixel Tablet
  • Pixel Fold

If you’re stuck with the Android 15 QPR1 beta, you won’t see an option to update today unless you leave the beta program. Remember that opting out cleans your phone’s internal storage.

What’s new with Android 15?

The Android 15 update isn’t the only thing coming. That’s part of Google’s October Pixel Feature Drop, rolling out alongside features and improvements that weren’t part of the beta program. While we still don’t know exactly what new features Google is adding to these next Pixel devices, we can be sure they will offer something exciting.

Today’s Feature Drop, the Android 15 release, and the Pixel Watches are expected to enhance its feature set further.

Other brands are preparing for Android 15

It seems, however, that Google is not the only one launching Android 15 today. For instance, the Moto Edge 50 Fusion has already given some Motorola users in India the Android 15 update prompts, even before the official announcement. It’s still in its early stages and available only to beta testers, but it’s a sign that other manufacturers are also preparing to follow Google’s lead.

Tech enthusiasts and developers alike have followed Android 15’s development since its source code launch in September

Although exact dates are unknown, other major players such as Xiaomi, Vivo, and Nothing are expected to announce their Android 15 release times even closer.

Tech enthusiasts and developers alike have followed Android 15’s development since its source code launch in September. Since then, we’ve heard various leaks and rumors keeping the excitement alive, with many saying October may be the official release window. That leak was the biggest clue, as it suggested October 15 would be the day, and it has proved so.

With months of anticipation, this slipup from Google is probably not the grand announcement everyone expected, but it is a fitting end. Android 15 is here, and it’s only a matter of time before Pixel owners get their hands on it.
