Today, we will be going over the iPhone 14 rumors that have accumulated over the past months leading up to the September 7th Apple event.
The anticipated iPhone 14 will most likely be unveiled this week at Apple’s “Far Out” launch event on September 7th. We’ve heard a host of speculations regarding the next iPhone range after nearly a year of waiting, ranging from its likely release date and pricing to design modifications and new camera functions. We also got a glimpse at its operating system, iOS 16; here’s how to get the beta right now.
Despite all of the excitement around the iPhone 14, Pro, Max, and Pro Max, there are still many unanswered questions. Will Apple hike the price of its next-generation iPhones? When will you be able to preorder and purchase the iPhone 14? What distinguishes it from the iPhone 13? And how will it even look?
iPhone 14 rumors
We won’t know for sure until Apple makes its big announcement, but one thing is certain: Now isn’t the time to buy a new iPhone, especially because Apple’s 2022 flagship is expected to be released soon. We anticipate to see the Apple Watch Series 8 soon, as well as a new Apple Watch SE and Apple Watch Pro. While we wait for the iPhone 14 to be released, we’re compiling all of the rumors concerning the new iPhone.
iPhone 14 lineup
We don’t know much about the iPhone 14, but we’ve heard that Apple’s next range will do away with the Mini in favor of bigger phones. A 2021 report from Nikkei Asian Review forecasted the iPhone 14 Mini’s demise, while a research note acquired by MacRumors from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also anticipated the Mini’s demise. According to Kuo, the iPhone 14 portfolio would still have four models, a “high-end” and a “low-end,” each with two size possibilities.
While name speculation isn’t as relevant to Apple’s 2022 lineup as it was for the unlucky 13, rumors suggest a slight shift in naming conventions, with an iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Max, and iPhone 14 Pro Max, with “Pro” designating higher-end specs and “Max” referring to the larger screen size.
iPhone 14 screen sizes
Apple’s last two iPhone lines had the same 6.1-inch basic model, up to 6.7 inches for the Pro Max. According to the same Nikkei Asian Review article, Apple will keep these iPhone 14 sizes but drop the 5.4-inch Mini. This rumor is supported by a March 9to5Mac article. According to reports, the iPhone 12 Mini sold poorly, so it’ll come as no surprise if Apple retires the little phone in 2022.
Although the upcoming iPhone is believed to have the same size as past generations, the display bezels on the Pro Max are supposed to be 20% thinner, according to CAD renderings posted by Twitter leaker ShrimpApplePro. This implies that the screen will be somewhat bigger. It’s crucial to note, however, that this report should be regarded with a grain of salt because ShrimpApplePro doesn’t have a long track record to back up their claims.

Will there be a SIM card?
In 2020, speculations began to circulate that iPhone will discontinue the use of physical SIM cards completely, and now a series of leaks indicated that the iPhone 14 may be the first model to do so. 9to5Mac broke down the rumors, which began with a Brazilian website stating the iPhone 15 Pro will be physically SIM-free. Then, according to MacRumors, Apple is preparing major carriers for eSIM-only phones by September, based on an anonymous tip. Apple leaker DylanDKT verified being “in agreement” with stories of the actual SIM card tray being removed, yet his Twitter account appears to have vanished afterwards.
iPhone 14 release date
Apple’s next launch event is scheduled for September 7 at 10 a.m. PT (1 p.m. ET, 6 p.m. BST). The next iPhone is likely to be unveiled during this event, potentially alongside the Apple Watch Series 8 device. Although we now know when the iPhone 14 will be released, the exact date has yet to be announced. However, rumors, like other features of the upcoming iPhone, might give some indications. According to a recent Bloomberg rumor, the next iPhone will go on sale on September 16.
Almost every year, Apple has its annual autumn iPhone event in September, with the phones launched immediately thereafter, generally on the Friday of the following week. Apple will sometimes stagger the release dates of certain models, especially when introducing a new style or size. As a result, the iPhone 14 range may have more than one release date. Here’s what we know thus far:
- Apple’s activities are usually held on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Apple’s iPhone 13 event took place on Tuesday, September 14, while this year’s event is scheduled for Wednesday, September 7.
- iPhone releases are usually scheduled a week and a half after Apple makes an announcement.
- New iPhones are typically introduced on a Friday during the third week of September. Preorders for the iPhone 13 began on September 17, and the phones went on sale on September 24.
iPhone 14 price
Apple made no significant price changes between the iPhone 12 in 2020 and the iPhone 13 in 2021. However, with more changes predicted for the iPhone 14, it’s logical to expect Apple to boost pricing in 2022. According to Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives, the new iPhone could see a $100 price increase. “Prices have been increasing across the whole supply chain, and Cupertino needs to pass these costs to the consumer on this release,” Ives told The Sun. According to Kuo, Apple may raise the price of its upcoming iPhone.

Hon Hai/Foxconn is one of the winners of the increased ASP of iPhone 14 series. I estimated iPhone 14 series ASP would increase by about 15% (vs. iPhone 13 series ASP) to $1,000-1,050 (USD) due to two iPhone 14 Pro's price hikes & higher shipment proportion. https://t.co/UgiW0kom4F— 郭明錤 (Ming-Chi Kuo) (@mingchikuo) August 10, 2022
However, some sources say that the iPhone 14 will be priced similarly to last year’s model, if not lower. According to yeux1122, a Korean leaker, Apple wants to “lock” the price of the iPhone 14’s basic model.

iPhone 14 camera
Apple may have a few camera improvements planned for the next iPhone 14. According to rumors, the tech titan has chosen a new supplier for its front-facing camera to produce a higher-end lens. South Korean supplier LG Innotek will supply the new selfie camera for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, according to a claim from Korean tech blog ET News, citing unidentified industry insiders.
In an investor note posted on by 9to5Mac shortly after the iPhone 13 debut, Kuo also revealed knowledge regarding the iPhone 14’s anticipated camera advancements. In the note, Kuo predicts a hole-punch front camera, which would eliminate the notch on the iPhone 14, as well as a 48-megapixel wide rear camera for the Pro and Pro Max models, up from 12 megapixels on previous iPhones.
According to a January report from MacRumors, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will have a hole-and-pill shaped design to accommodate the front-facing camera and Face ID. The hole cutout is believed to be for the Face ID dot projector, and the pill-shaped cutout holds the front camera and Face ID camera. This report is supported by 91mobiles‘ discovery of allegedly leaked CAD renderings of the iPhone 14.
Kuo’s claim about the camera’s megapixel capacity corresponds to both a recent research note from Haitong International Securities, which was also covered by MacRumors, and a report from research firm TrendForce. Jeff Pu and TrendForce both believe the two Pro versions will include a 48-megapixel wide lens.
According to Pu, the iPhones will include a triple-lens rear camera system with 12-megapixel ultrawide and telephoto lenses in addition to the 48-megapixel wide lens. According to the expert, the Pro variants of the iPhone 14 might also include 8GB of RAM. (The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max both feature 6GB.) This is supported by a story from a Korean site that cites local supply chain sources, as noted by MacRumors.
The iPhone 13 camera has been upgraded with a new Cinematic mode, ProRes video, and minor zoom enhancements. We earlier reported on speculations that the whole range might have lidar, the iPhone 12 Pro’s notable depth-sensing technology, but lidar ended up only appearing on the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max. It’s likely that Apple may extend the functionality across its whole lineup in 2022, but we haven’t heard anything yet.
Another camera enhancement we’re still waiting for is a better telephoto lens. While the iPhone 13 Pro now has a 3x optical zoom, it still falls short of several competing flagships, notably Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra, which has a 10x optical zoom.
Will iPhone 14 have Touch ID?
The most often pushed-back feature in Apple rumor land is the reintroduction of Touch ID. Early speculations predicted that Touch ID will return with the iPhone 12, but when that didn’t materialize, curiosity shifted to the iPhone 13. Even before the iPhone 13 (without Touch ID) was released, the buzz was that the iPhone 14 will be it. That is also becoming less plausible. Kuo projected in late September that the iPhone will not recover Touch ID technology until 2023. That’s… the iPhone 15?
A notch-less iPhone 14
The week before the iPhone 13 unveiling, YouTuber and iPhone leaker Jon Prosser (whose track record is admittedly patchy) made headlines by sharing renderings he commissioned of the iPhone 14 Pro Max based on “actual photographs and schematics” supplied to him from supposed Apple sources.
Prosser’s images confirm a number of previously published speculations, including Kuo’s notchless display and hole-punch camera, as well as the iPhone 14 Pro’s titanium alloy frame, which was initially mentioned in a JPMorgan Chase report from 2021. We expected the iPhone 13 to be notch-free, but instead we received a slimmed-down, but still extremely notchy, notch. With the launching of the iPhone X in 2017, Apple introduced the world to the notched display, and although competitors addressed the selfie issue with hole-punch and under-display cameras, Apple hasn’t, well, pulled it down a notch.
However, Prosser’s renders appear to confirm previous reports that Apple would finally remove the iPhone’s notch in 2022. In a September issue of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman anticipated a “total makeover” for the iPhone 14, while Young believes Apple would debut a hole-and-pill shaped design for the new iPhone. This hole-and-pill display first appeared in schematics on the Chinese social media network Weibo, which Prosser later reposted.
Those who have been hoping for a notchless iPhone since the iPhone 12 and had their expectations crushed by the iPhone 13 might now perhaps look forward to the fruition of their all-screen fantasies with the iPhone 14 in 2022.
Before you get too enthusiastic, keep in mind that not all iPhone 14 models will have a new notchless design. In March, MySmartPrice unveiled alleged CAD renderings of the iPhone 14, displaying a notch. However, renderings of the 14 Pro model published by 91Mobiles the day before show a notchless display. If these reports are accurate, it appears like you’ll have to upgrade to the Pro to get rid of the notch.
No camera bump and Lightning port
Another significant design modification shown in Prosser’s renderings is a flattened camera bump. According to Prosser, the iPhone 14 body will be a “thick guy,” big enough to accommodate all of the camera technology without an obnoxious, protruding camera configuration on the rear. Why does the iPhone 14 have to be so thick? Perhaps to hold a larger battery or the previously anticipated periscope camera, which Kuo said would arrive in 2020. Kuo and legendary tech leaker Max Weinbach, on the other hand, have pointed to a bigger camera bump in the 14 Pro and Pro Max.
According to Prosser, two previous speculations that will not come true are the elimination of the Lightning connector and the adoption of USB-C. (the EU may force Apple to add USB-C ports to iPhones, however). Rumors about an entirely portless iPhone have been circulating for some time, but it looks that they will not be realized until 2022.
iPhone 14 colors
As far as colors go, Prosser‘s render colors were not based on any genuine information from his sources, save for a pale gold hue, which he claims to have seen proof of himself. However, like with any alleged specifications, we won’t know the exact color possibilities for the iPhone 14 until it’s unveiled.
iPhone 14 rumors of features and specs
Here’s everything else we know (or believe we know) about the iPhone 14 lineup’s specs and probable new features so far.
Always-on lock screen
According to Bloomberg, Apple’s iOS 16 will have an always-on setting for the lock screen. However, this capability may be limited to the high-end iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Better battery life
According to a rumor in Taiwan’s Economic Daily News, Apple’s 2022 iPhone might have greater battery life (via MacRumors). This is said to be due to a new 5G chip, which could also provide Wi-Fi 6E connectivity to the new iPhone. A higher battery capacity for each model in the iPhone 14 series may also help with battery life. The normal iPhone 14 may feature a 3,279-mAh battery, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max may have a 4,323-mAh battery, according to ShrimpApplePro.
Wi-Fi 6E adoption
According to a November note from Kuo, as published by 9to5Mac, the iPhone 14 might include Wi-Fi 6E. However, the analyst believes that the components required for Wi-Fi 6E may be in limited supply. Wi-Fi 6E is also claimed to be present in Apple’s anticipated VR gear.
A16 chip
Previous rumors said that the whole iPhone 14 series will be upgraded to an A16 chip, an improvement above the prior iPhone’s A15 chip, in keeping with Apple’s previous trend. However, in March, Kuo anticipated that the A16 would only be found in the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, while the 14 and 14 Max would continue to use the A15.
Only two Pro models would upgrade to the A16 processor, while the 14 & 14 Max will remain the A15. All four new models will likely come with 6GB RAM, with the difference being LPDDR 5 (14 Pro & 14 Pro Max) vs. LPDDR 4X (14 & 14 Max). https://t.co/tHcszIz6gX

120Hz ProMotion display
All iPhone 14 models might contain Apple’s ProMotion display, which is presently available exclusively on the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max. ProMotion increases the refresh rate of the screen to 120Hz for better performance. Based on improvements in Apple’s supply chain that would make it simpler for the firm to provide the functionality throughout its next generation, this is more speculation than true rumor.
Young, on the other hand, believes that Apple will continue to sell ProMotion screens only on its Pro models. According to the analyst, Chinese manufacturer BOE would be one of Apple’s LTPO OLED display suppliers, although the firm does not currently have a huge manufacturing capacity.
5G connectivity
Apple added 5G connection to its iPhone 12 series and, predictably, included it in the iPhone 13. There’s no reason to think we won’t see 5G-capable iPhone 14s as well. According to a 2021 article from Nikkei Asian Review, Apple will “go all in on 5G” in 2022.
MagSafe accessories
MagSafe, like 5G, was added to the iPhone with the 2020 iPhone 12 series. One of our favorite iPhone 12 features was the snap-on, magnetic accessories, which included wallets, power packs, and chargers. The iPhone 13 is also MagSafe compatible, and we anticipate that Apple’s next generation of phones will be as well.
Satellite connectivity
According to Bloomberg, one 11th-hour iPhone 13 rumor from Kuo that did not come true was the addition of satellite connection, which would let users to send text messages through satellite in locations without cellular coverage, at least in emergency scenarios. Satellite connection isn’t available in the iPhone 13 series, but that might indicate it’ll be available in the iPhone 14.
