Samsung revealed its forthcoming Samsung Unpacked 2022 event, to be aired this Wednesday. It will be available in both virtual reality and actual reality. Fans of the Metaverse can watch the event at 837X, a recreation of Samsung’s main New York City store location created on Decentraland, a virtual reality platform.

Samsung’s foray into the metaverse is fascinating, in part, because the company has said so little about virtual reality recently. When Samsung launched Gear VR, a smartphone-based virtual reality platform, it was one of the first businesses to do so. Samsung announced last December that it would be retiring Gear VR, which was formerly known as one of the less pricey and more popular headsets, with no word on a replacement.
It’s critical for any firm to be cautious in the metaverse, especially since many experts in business and technology regard it as a gimmick.

Following a poor earnings call last week, Facebook parent Meta’s stock dropped more than 26 percent. It also said it lost over $10 billion on Reality Labs, its AR and VR division, during an earnings call last week. The considerable hype surrounding the metaverse, nevertheless, does not seem to be abating.

The metaverse is attracting a lot of attention from businesses, including Walmart, Microsoft, Nike, and Disney. While interest in VR has never been higher (VR hardware sales increased by nearly half in 2021), it is still seen as a niche product.
The metaverse’s main drawback, in a nutshell, is that no one seems to know what problem it’s intended to solve. Samsung has not provided much information about how watching this week’s Unpacked in VR is superior than, or significantly different from, simply streaming it on any of the eight other places it will be accessible other than a vague tweet alluding to the introduction of some new feature. Samsung’s numerous accounts on YouTube, TikTok, and Twitter are examples of such platforms. On Twitch and Reddit, they include Samsung’s various accounts.
The Galaxy S22 is expected to make its official debut at the Samsung Unpacked event.
