How to disable sound devices on Windows 11?

Learn how to disable sound devices on Windows 11 by following our step by step guide.

Today we are going to show you how to disable sound devices on Windows 11. If you don’t want to use your Windows 11 PC’s audio output device, like speakers, headphones, or a headset, you may turn it off in Settings without uninstalling it.

How to disable sound devices on Windows 11?

The process is really easy, just follow these steps:

  • Open the Windows Settings.
  • If you don’t know how, you can just hit the Windows+i hotkey or you can right-click on the Start icon and choose “Settings” from the menu that appears.
  • Then enter “System” and go to “Sound”.
  • Or you can just right-click onto the speaker icon and select “Sound Settings” from the menu.

  • Into the settings page, navigate to the “Sound” section, look for the “Output” option and click on the arrow icon located next to the sound device that you want to disable.
  • Enter the “General” section from the “Properties” page of the sound device.
  • Find the “Audio” option called “Allow apps and Windows to use this device for audio”
  • Select “Don’t Allow.”
  • Close settings.

You’ve succesfully disabled that sound device without going into Device Manager.

How to re-enable a sound device on Windows 11?

The process is fairly similar. Follow these steps:

  • Just right-click onto the speaker icon and select “Sound Settings” from the menu.
  • Then enter “System” and go to “Sound”.
  • Look for the “Advanced” section.

  • Choose “All Sound Devices.”
  • Look for the device that you want to enable in the list.
  • Click the “Allow” button under “Audio” on the device’s Properties page.
  • Close settings.
