Huawei is not going through its best moments. Since it can not include Google services in their phones, sales have fallen considerably, but that does not mean that they do not continue to innovate, the Huawei P50 shows that they still want to be the best when it comes to the smartphone sector.

But it is not the P50 or the confirmed P50 Lite that we are going to talk about now, but a rollable mobile that is cooking in the oven of the Chinese brand.

We already saw the concept with OPPO, although it is not yet possible to find cell phones with a rollable screen in the corner store. We’re talking about screens that roll up inside to unfold more naturally than with a foldable mobile, transforming a mobile into a tablet seamlessly.

Now there is a patent from Huawei that shows there is interest in this technology. The patent seems to suggest that the company is toying with the idea of creating a rollable phone that can be pulled outward to extend the screen. The patent mentions a rolling mechanism that relies on magnets, which would tension the screen to help roll it up and stretch it out. The patent mentions that it could go from 6.5 inches to 11 inches.

Being a patent, we do not know if it will become a commercial product or if they are simply protecting an idea from being copied by other manufacturers, or to get paid in case another company decides to implement something similar.

History of the filed patent

As can be ascertained, on January 31, 2021, Huawei Technologies filed the patent with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO). Its title was “An electronic device having a rolling display comprising magnetic means for flattening the display when removed.”

The document is 21 pages long and was published on August 5, just a few days ago.

The documentation appears to be based on a patent that Huawei already applied for in April 2020 for a Huawei smartphone with a sliding screen, although it has evolved somewhat in the idea.
