Today we are going to show you how to block someone on Discord. Anyone who has played a game with an open chat knows how there may be people with problematic behavior and this makes the whole experience less fun for everyone.
Whether someone is spamming the chat, sending abusive messages, or just being a general nuisance, this type of toxic behavior can be prevented. You may be looking for a way to block this person or avoid having to deal with him/her.
How to block someone on Discord?
Know your options
When it comes to dealing with toxic individuals on Discord, there are several options to choose from. You have the option to block, mute, kick or ban the individual. While each of these options can help deal with troublemakers, they all serve a slightly different purpose.
Blocking a user prevents them from communicating with you by text message. They will still be able to see your messages and will be able to see your online status.
Muting is similar but is for the voice channel. A user you mute cannot speak in the channel, but you can still hear what the chat is saying.
Muting also works in the voice channel and prevents the user from hearing what is being said.
Kicking, of course, means being completely booted from the channel or server. However, a user can rejoin the server after you kick him/her.
Banning is the highest level of sanction. A user who is banned is kicked from the server and cannot rejoin. In addition, the administrator may optionally choose to delete their posts on the server for the last 24 hours or the last seven days.
If you need to block someone on Discord, here’s how to do it:
- Select the user’s profile name in the Direct Message application.
- Select Block.
The blocked person can still see your messages and will always be able to see your status, but they won’t be able to reply to you or contact you using Discord. This is particularly useful when you simply don’t want to be bothered by a chat spammer.
What happens if I block someone on a Discord server?
If the person you blocked is on the same server as you, their messages will appear as “Message from a blocked person”. The person you blocked can still see your messages unless you have also blocked them.
The only way to stop these users from seeing your messages is to ban them from the server. If you do not have administrative approval to do this, ask the administrator if you can ban them. Otherwise, you might have to leave the server.

FAQ
If I block someone, can he/she still see my posts?
If you block someone and stay on the same server with that person, then yes, the other user can see your posts. The messages will appear as hidden, but the blocked user has the option to discover your message and view the content.
Will anyone know that I have blocked that person?
Yes and no. Discord will not send an alert to the user that they have been blocked. The user will know because you will no longer appear in their friend list and, if you are still on the same server, a message will appear informing the user that they have been blocked by you.
How do I unblock someone on Discord?
