Google will launch a preview version of its AI health coach tomorrow for select Fitbit Premium users in the United States. The initial release targets Android devices only, with an iOS version to follow later.
This public preview functions as a beta release, allowing Google to collect user feedback for adding, changing, or improving features and capabilities. The company notes that the new experience will include some gaps at launch.
The AI health coach operates as a chatbot to assist users in setting and achieving fitness and health goals. Google describes it as secure, personalized, and grounded in science. Users start with a five-to-ten minute conversation to evaluate their health and fitness objectives.
The coach serves multiple roles, including as a sounding board for personal health, fitness, and sleep goals, and as a personal trainer. It enables users to review and adjust fitness plans, track progress, receive advice on trends, and generate workouts. For example, the chatbot can design exercises suited to specific constraints, such as a limited space in a hotel room.
Additional features include brainstorming questions for doctors and tracking and analyzing sleep metrics. The coach delivers detailed sleep analysis and identifies patterns and trends that influence sleep quality. All data generated through interactions with the coach remains accessible within the Fitbit app.
The preview will not become available to all users immediately. Eligible Fitbit Premium subscribers will receive in-app notifications when the software is ready for them. The feature is compatible with any Pixel Watch or Fitbit device.
Google is redesigning the Fitbit app to emphasize AI integration, positioning the health coach as a central component woven throughout the app’s various functions.
