Snap Inc. has announced plans to launch its first commercially available augmented reality glasses, named “Specs,” in 2026. The announcement was made during the Augmented World Expo (AWE) 2025, currently underway in Long Beach, California.
This marks a significant shift for the company, whose previous fifth-generation AR glasses, Spectacles 5, unveiled last September, were exclusively accessible to developers through a $99/month program.
Evan Spiegel, co-founder and CEO of Snap Inc., expressed confidence in the upcoming launch, stating, “We believe the time is right for a revolution in computing that naturally integrates our digital experiences with the physical world, and we can’t wait to publicly launch our new Specs next year.” Spiegel also boldly claimed that Specs are “the most advanced personal computer in the world.”
While comprehensive details about Specs were not disclosed, Snap confirmed these AR glasses will feature “see-through Lenses that enhance the physical world with digital experience.” The company also revealed a substantial investment in AR glasses development over the past 11 years, totaling more than $3 billion.
Beyond the Specs launch timeframe, Snap also shared updates on its Snap OS, highlighting integrations with OpenAI and Gemini on Google Cloud. New tools for developers focusing on location-based experiences were introduced, including the Fleet Management app, Guided Mode, and Guided Navigation.
Further announcements included forthcoming WebXR support in the browser and a partnership with Niantic Spatial. This collaboration aims to integrate Niantic’s Visual Positioning System into Lens Studio and Specs, contributing to the creation of an AI-powered map of the world.
