Meta, which last hit the headlines on 5 March 2024 with the crash of Instagram, Facebook, and Threads, has now fired 50 people from the Messenger team.
Stating that layoffs affect technical management positions and that the company is not its first layoff attempt, it defends that it made this move with its 2024 “year of efficiency” strategy.
Meta laid off 50 people in the Facebook Messenger team
Meta also laid off 13% of its workforce and more than 10,000 employees in 2023. The layoffs are interpreted as part of the company’s efforts to reduce costs and optimize resources.
In addition to Meta, other major tech companies such as Google, Twitch, and Epic Games also made layoffs under the name of reorganization in 2024. According to estimates, more than 50,000 employees are expected to be laid off in the technology sector throughout 2024.
It is unknown exactly what the reasons behind Meta’s layoff decision are. However, the company’s 2024 “Year of Efficiency” strategy and efforts to reduce costs stand out as the main factors behind this decision.
Last year, Meta made structural changes and redundancies to simplify its operations. This year, internal cuts are expected to continue. Although Meta has state-of-the-art tools and platforms, employees are in a worrying atmosphere.
Time will tell what impact the layoffs will have on Meta’s Messenger platform. However, this move may negatively affect the company’s capacity to develop the platform and introduce new features.
Meta’s layoff decision is seen as part of a recent growing trend in the technology sector. Other major tech companies such as Google, Twitch, and Epic Games also made layoffs under the name of reorganization in 2024.
Meta’s layoff of 50 people from the Messenger team confirms the technology sector’s uncertainties and economic recession concerns. Similar layoffs in other technology companies are quite possible in the coming period.
