The “Elon Musk CIS tweet” caused a buzz on X, and the company’s boss is getting “complicated” responses from the community. While some are with Musk on this matter, many are against him. Considering it is a “sensitive” topic, Musk’s take on the word “cis” being a slur on Twitter, or now X, angered many people.

Elon Musk, the influential figure and current head of Twitter, sparked intense debate and criticism after a recent tweet. The social media platform’s chief, known for his outspoken nature and controversial decisions, responded to a user’s complaint about being called “cissy” and “cis.” Musk’s response, declaring the words ‘cis’ and ‘cisgender’ as slurs on the platform, ignited a firestorm within the online community.

The Elon Musk CIS tweet is what people are talking about right now

The internet mogul’s latest statement is the latest in a string of contentious measures since taking over Twitter in October 2022. Despite legal squabbles over Twitter’s $44 billion acquisition, Musk’s leadership resulted in major revisions to content standards and practices. He cooperated with government takedown orders, prohibited users from following his private plane, and limited access to other websites.

Musk’s change to Twitter’s ban on transphobic content, on the other hand, has gotten a lot of attention. Previously, Twitter discreetly revised its policy on “hateful conduct,” permitting the use of terminology like “cis,” which refers to those whose gender matches their birth assignment, without taking into account the possible offense it could cause transgender people. Musk’s outspoken objection to this terminology, labeling them ‘ slurs’ on the platform, has sparked significant outrage.

CIS meaning

The term ‘cisgender,’ often shortened to ‘cis,’ refers to a person whose gender identity aligns with the sex they were assigned at birth. In simpler terms, if someone is assigned male at birth and identifies as a man, they’re considered cisgender. Similarly, if a person is assigned female at birth and identifies as a woman, they are also considered cisgender.

Twitter’s turmoil over anti-trans actions and resignations

According to QZ, the “Elon Musk CIS tweet” comes on the heels of two high-level resignations from Twitter’s trust and safety team. These exits were spurred by a dispute over Twitter’s content management and allegations of suppressing an anti-transgender documentary by The Daily Wire, a right-wing site. Musk’s backing of sharing such content and his take on using preferred pronouns added fuel to the fire.

The Tesla boss’ personal link to the issue complicates matters. Musk’s daughter, who identifies as trans, has publicly distanced herself from her father, citing differences beyond gender identity for their strained relationship, said QZ. Given this backdrop, Musk’s firm stance on matters related to trans issues continues to draw scrutiny and criticism from various corners.

In a nutshell, the “Elon Musk CIS tweet” and his unwavering position on Twitter’s gender-related terms have sparked significant discussions and debates on the platform. The controversies surrounding content control, specific terms, and Musk’s personal connections reflect the ongoing complexities and challenges of free speech and inclusivity in the online world.
