All the BG3 Umbral Gem locations
The four Umbral Gems can be found in specific locations, each with its own unique trial or obstacle Here are all the Umbral Gems in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Soft-Step Trial
- Self-Same Trial
- Faith-Step Trial
- Orthon
Let’s move on to our main discussion: all the BG3 Umbral Gem locations!
Soft-Step Trial
The Umbral Gems are first seen during the Soft-Step Trial, which is close to the Gauntlet of Shar waypoint. From the temple’s entrance, proceed north until you reach the Verge of Shadows chamber. An easy puzzle is waiting for you here. An essential object that must be used to open the door behind it is surrounded by an unseen wall.
All eight of the Mystic Thuribles must be rendered inoperable, but they are too high for you to access. You can lower the Thuribles by using the levers in four nearby side chambers. Once they are down, switch them off one at a time to expose the secret passageway. In Tactical View, find your way through the wall’s labyrinth to get the object that will unlock the entrance.
To discover the Soft-Step Trial, travel north and then west. This stealth challenge requires you to get to the finish line without being seen. Consult our Soft-Step Trial guide for advice on how to complete this trial. When you’re done, take the Umbral Gem from the altar and use it to teleport back to where you started.
Self-Same Trial
Arguably, the most challenging trial awaits you next, the Self-Same Trial, situated near the Soft-Step Trial. Open the door and use the Sacrificial Bowl to unlock the opposite end. Continue through the vast room until you engage in a battle against shadow versions of your own party members.
Your whole focus is required in this mirror battle because hitting anybody or anything but your shadow counterpart would result in penalties. For instance, in order to avoid the Cheater’s Folly penalty, which decreases her ability scores, Shadowheart must target her shadow clone.
While there’s no one-size-fits-all strategy for this battle, consider these tips:
- Claim the high ground in the central room to control the battlefield.
- Shadows frequently turn invisible; ensure you have means to detect them, such as gear, scrolls, or potions.
- If necessary, use the Cleric spell “Daylight” to hinder the shadows from hiding.
- Accept the Cheater’s Folly penalty to eliminate a weakened opponent.
- Equip Potion of Speed to enhance your combat effectiveness.
- Defeat the shadows and collect the Umbral Gem from the last one vanquished. Return to the corridor outside the room.
Faith-Step Trial
Take the steps at the end of the passageway to the lower floor where the Faith-Step Trial will be conducted. In the trial, you must navigate a road that is initially black but progressively becomes lighter as you proceed. You’ll have to keep track of the path’s location since it vanishes.
Don’t enter right away after opening the door. Instead, place your camera over the middle of the room to see the complete path before moving forward. It will gradually disappear as you proceed down the trail. As soon as you’re prepared, interact with the Sacrificial Bowl to start the experiment. Consult the path in the pictures below if your memory fails. Claim the Umbral Gem when you reach the other side, then use the altar to teleport to the room’s entrance.
Return to the Gauntlet of Shar waypoint and head east to find the Umbral Gem in Yurgir, the Orthon’s Lair. You’ll come across the Displacer Beast along this route, although it is currently not dangerous. Until you reach Yurgir the Orthon’s Lair, continue to follow the beast. Here, you must make a crucial choice between siding with Raphael and getting rid of Yurgir or siding with Yurgir and getting rid of him. The Umbral Gem, which will determine how your adventure ends, is waiting for you on the steps near the king’s throne.
Orthon
If you decide to support Raphael, get ready for a difficult fight with Yurgir. As an alternative, you can use Persuasion and Bard options to convince Yurgir to commit suicide. If you decide to support Yurgir, it will be your responsibility to beat the chatty rats nearby in order to violate his contract.
Once you’ve gotten rid of enough rats, travel west from Yurgir’s lair and jump across ledges to get to a location below, where you’ll encounter a pit full of skulls. Your tribulations continue here as you fight through hordes of rats to the point when Lythridor, the last Dark Justiciar, appears.
Destroy him to obtain special treasure and void Yurgir’s contract. Return to Yurgir, take in the events that unfold, and collect the last Umbral Gem.
