TikTok said today that it will conduct a music competition akin to prominent talent shows such as The Voice. The TikTok Gimme the Mic competition will be hosted on TikTok live streams and will include live voting from fans as part of the event.

“TikTok Gimme The Mic” is a global competition with the goal of “discovering new musical talent and supporting aspiring music creators,” according to a TikTok blog post. The tournament is open to all users aged 18 and over. TikTok’s LIVE options have been expanded.

The winner in the United States will get 50,000 Diamonds. The victors from each nation will battle for the title of Global “Gimme The Mic” Champion on September 22 and 23, with a grand prize of 500,000 diamonds at stake. It should be noted, however, that the terms of service of TikTok’s parent firm ByteDance allow it to adjust the value of Diamonds at any time.

“Every day on TikTok LIVE, we’re introduced to talented creators and get to interact with and draw inspiration from their boundless creativity in real time. At TikTok, we are committed to introducing more ways to connect and engage on TikTok LIVE, fostering deeper engagement, and providing valuable and exciting entertainment for our community,” TikTok’s official blog post read.

TikTok Gimme The Mic format

The tournament is divided into three stages: the audition, the semifinal, and the grand finale. Beginning today, aspiring artists may submit a 30-second audition video with the hashtag #GIMMETHEMIC. To audition, users must first register on the app’s audition website and then submit one short submission video (30 seconds or less) with the hashtag #GIMMETHEMIC between August 7 and August 16.

TikTok spam invites have become frustrating but there is a fix

The best 30 entries will then move on to the semifinals, where they will perform in a live-streamed event. From September 1 to September 3, a series of Multi-guest LIVE videos on @tiktoklive_us will take place in the Semi-Final stage.

Each contestant will be partnered with another creative and compete in a series of TikTok LIVEs in September. Viewers will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite performance. Live viewers may vote for their favorites to proceed. The top ten performers will compete in a worldwide tournament with winners from across the world on September 10th in the United States.

“We are committed to creating fun and entertaining ways to elevate our talented community and support them as they share their passion and creativity with the world. Gimme the Mic is a chance for contestants to showcase their talent to a wider community. Not only that, global contest winners will receive a trophy, have the opportunity to be featured on official TikTok channels, and receive up to 500,000 Diamond rewards,” TikTok said in its official blog post.

TikTok has become something of a hitmaker in recent years. Old songs that become a viral return on Billboard charts and small samples of tunes from relatively unknown artists gain traction. The Gimme the Mic competition might be another avenue for musicians to gain success, but the first prizes of winning the competition are disappointing, to put it mildly.

TikTok generally retains 50% of artist revenue from in-app gifts, but this time, the rewards will not be taxed, and the winner will take home all of the money.

TikTok has been investing in its live streaming equipment for months, particularly for time-sensitive events involving audience interaction. In February, the firm launched a series of live trivia contests, similar to what HQ Trivia conducted before it went bankrupt. TikTok has also progressively introduced additional live streaming creation capabilities, such as more control over who may access streams.
