In this article, we are going to be covering the new Apple San Diego campus site that was acquired by the company for $445 million.
Apple San Diego campus will provide hundreds of new jobs
Apple has purchased the existing Rancho Vista Corporate Center in San Diego as part of its ongoing expansion of hardware and software engineering in the region. In 2019, Apple stated that it wanted to create a new campus in San Diego and generate 1,200 new technology jobs by 2022. It has apparently been leasing buildings in University City and Rancho Bernardo since then, but it has recently purchased the 67-acre Rancho Vista Corporate Center for $445 million.
This is Apple’s first commercial property purchase in the region, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune. According to the magazine, Apple has been expanding its hiring ambitions and now hopes to have 5,000 local employees by 2026.
“We’ve been part of the community in San Diego for more than two decades,” an Apple spokesperson told the publication, “and are thrilled to continue investing here as we expand our world-class teams.”
In 2019, city authorities stated that Apple intended to hire for both hardware and software positions. However, the presence of Qualcomm in the region fueled speculation that Apple was focusing its efforts on replacing that company’s cellular modem chips. According to The San Diego Union-Tribune, Apple’s employment page now offers new postings in software, data science, and other non-hardware areas.
Hewlett Packard once owned Rancho Vista Corporate Center. HP sold the facility to Swift Real Estate for $69 million before leasing back five of the campus’s seven buildings. Swift Real Estate claims to have spent $80 million refurbishing the campus, which includes the construction of a fitness facility, various sports courts, and a “professionally-managed cafe.”
When will be Apple moving to San Diego campus?
There is no set time for the move to the new campus, but we can expect Apple to do renovations and changes to the acquired property. After the construction is finished, the new campus will be operational.
