PUBG developer Krafton is going to make NFT games on the Solana blockchain
Many large video game firms are starting to look at the Web 3 gaming area, experimenting with NFT assets and cryptocurrencies in the process. Now, another well-known game developer is going to create games on Solana.
Today, South Korean game developer Krafton, Inc. announced a long-term partnership with Solana Labs, with the objective of creating and marketing blockchain and NFT-based games that run on the network. The companies will also look into other co-investment possibilities as part of their collaboration.
Krafton is the creator of PUBG: Battlegrounds, a popular battle royale game franchise that currently includes mobile versions for iOS and Android as well as PC and console releases. The mobile iOS and Android versions have over one billion downloads, as well as more than 75 million combined downloads on its PC and console editions. The developer studio recently released a new PUBG mobile game dubbed New State Mobile.
Krafton has yet to reveal whether it will bring PUBG or another franchise into the Web3 space, as well as create new intellectual property for NFT-driven blockchain games on Solana. While PUBG is Krafton’s most recognized title, the company also owns franchises such as Subnautica and Tera, and distributes mobile games like Golf King and Bowling King.
“Krafton will continuously see ways to work closely with blockchain companies like Solana Labs as we work toward establishing our Web 3.0 ecosystem. Through this cooperation, Krafton will acquire the insight needed to accelerate its investment in and output of blockchain-based experiences.”

In February, Krafton announced several Web3 efforts, including $2.5 million in online auction platform Seoul Auction Blue and $4.1 million in its XBYBLUE subsidiary. To create NFT-related projects, Krafton will collaborate with Seoul Auction Blue and XBYBLUE.
Notable traditional game publishers that have established a presence in the NFT market include Ubisoft and Square Enix, while well-known game designers such as Will Wright and Peter Molyneux are also working on NFT-powered games. The most successful crypto game to date, the Ethereum-based Axie Infinity, has amassed more than $4 billion worth of NFT trading volume.
