PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (known as PUBG) is going to be a free-to-play game starting from January 12st, 2022, according to the announcements made at The Game Awards by developer company Krafton.
PUBG: Battlegrounds to be a F2P game
PUBG has been a paid game since its first appearance in 2017. The game was so successful back then that made other gaming studios start developing their own battle royale games. Epic Games‘ free-to-play Fortnite would be the biggest example of this.
Despite the fact that PUBG will soon be free to play, there will still be some elements that will be locked behind a paywall. Krafton has plans to launch a one-time account upgrade called Battlegrounds Plus for $12.99. This will allow players to access custom and ranked modes, exclusive in-game cosmetics and more.
People who have already bought the PUBG from Steam will receive the PUBG Plus Edition which includes Battlegrounds Plus upgrade and new cosmetics.
PUBG: Battlegrounds has managed to be a popular game despite having strong rivals such as Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone. The free-to-play mobile version of the game, PUBG Mobile, is dominating the mobile gaming scene.
Krafton has also released a follow-up game for mobile devices called PUBG: New State, which has been downloaded more than 1 billion times already.
