Bernie Sanders’s Inauguration Day dressing was probably the first meme of 2021. It was everywhere on social media.
While many of the guests were dressed in their finest gowns, the Vermont senator’s jacket and oversized mittens kept him comfortable while he sat alone during the ceremony.
People photoshopped him into Tony Soprano’s therapy room, onto the moon and every other place you can imagine.
March again
In between a deadly virus, terrifying fires, an exhausting political season, and a global mental health crisis, this last year seemed like the world’s end.
Social media users couldn’t believe that it had been almost a year since they were thrust into a new world. People weren’t ready for another March again.
Harry and Meghan’s Oprah interview
Oprah’s interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle exposed the royal family to be a racist organization that denied mental health treatment and pulled their security when the couple stepped away from senior royal roles. When the couple recounted stories about the royal family’s senior staff Oprah Winfrey’s faces turned into comedy gold.
The ship stuck in the Suez Canal
A cargo ship ran aground in the Suez Canal due to terrible weather conditions.
The image showing the authorities’ attempt to move the ship with eight tugboats and a small excavator was very funny for some people. Twitter users weren’t too optimistic about the outcome. Suddenly the platform was filled with funny memes.

The updated CDC guidelines for the fully vaccinated in May, inspired users for the creation of a new meme on Twitter.
“If you’re fully vaccinated, the CDC says, you can [fill here with jokes]”
Anakin and Padmé
The scene from Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones has been meme’d as a four-panel format this year.
The setup takes place in the first panel and the punchline in the second. This meme has been filled with numerous red flag subjects.
The French Dispatch
At the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, actors Wes Anderson, Timothée Chalamet, Tilda Swinton, and Bill Murray were in attendance to promote The French Dispatch. All of them looked really wild with their different outfits.
The contrast between Chalamet, Anderson, Swinton, and Murray, made people compare things that fall in the same category but have different feelings.

The famous pick up line became one of the funniest memes of 2021: “Did it hurt when you fell from heaven.” This meme has been used all over Twitter referencing movie scenes, song lyrics and more.
Yassify
Yass is an internet slang word that entered the mainstream in 2013. It was first used in 2013 on the web series Broad City and has been spreading ever since.
Now, it’s a verb, yassify, meaning to apply multiple filters to an image to make it look more attractive.
The bot @yassifyBot on Twitter allowed for the proliferation of Yassifications.
Evil be like
These “Evil be like” memes, showing the evil version of whatever the celebrities or characters are known for.
The feminine urge
Some “feminine urge” tweets are funny, some are relatable, some are just bizarre, and others are unfortunate.
Kirsten Dunst yelling
Some Twitter users took a screenshot of actress Kirsten Dunst defending actor Toby Maguire and used it to make a joke. This meme often features an image of someone else photoshopped over the actor Toby Maguire with “he SAID” tag.
