Google Pixel Watch is coming in 2022. Google is finally launching its own smartwatch called the Pixel Watch and it will launch in 2022.

Google has made its own smartphones for years under the Pixel line. (It also makes other accessories, including wireless headphones, but it’s never designed its own smartwatch). Despite the fact that Google has had a companion wearable platform for Android since 2014, it hasn’t designed its own smartwatch.

Google Pixel Watch “Rohan” will be Apple Watch’s new competitor

The watch is codenamed “Rohan.” It’s unclear whether Google will be calling its new fitness tracker a “Pixel Watch” or just a “watch.” But the new device, whether it will be called “Pixel Watch” or simply a “watch,” is being worked on by Google’s hardware team separately from Fitbit, which Google acquired last year. According to reports, the new device will serve much the same purpose as the Pixel phones: to be an example of what Google’s software is capable of running on top of top-notch hardware. The device is expected to cost more than a Fitbit and compete more directly with the Apple Watch.

Google is working on adding basic fitness tracking features to the new Pixel Watch, such as step counting and a heart rate monitor, with Google also reportedly working on debuting a Fitbit integration into Wear OS (codename “Nightlight”) with the new watch when it launches.

Google is currently in the middle of the latest reinvention of its smartwatch platform with Wear OS 3. Unlike the previous versions of Wear OS, this latest iteration has been developed as a partnership with Samsung, merging the Tizen platform into Google’s own. So far, Wear OS 3 has only launched on Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4, which runs a heavily customized version of the new operating system that eschews most of Google’s services and apps for Samsung’s own.

Another expected model by smartwatch lovers is Garmin Fenix 7. The new model is expected to keep its 5 button design and will have an improved screen. You can read more about updates and features for the Garmin Fenix 7.

Google Pixel Watch expected to launch in 2022In 2018, Google almost had a Pixel Watch, according to a report from a former Google hardware employee. The LG Watch Sport and LG Watch Style, released in 2017, were initially supposed to be marketed as part of the Pixel brand. But a senior Google hardware employee told Insider that Osterloh axed the idea because they “didn’t look like what belonged in the Pixel family.”

The news of Google’s new smartwatch is not a complete surprise. Osterloh mentioned earlier this year that the company had already developed a smartwatch internally, though he didn’t specify if that device would be released. It’s unclear if Osterloh was referring to the Rohan or some other future smartwatch, but it’s clear Google is moving quickly with its own wearable.
