For years, Google has been criticized by accusations of monopolizing online search, and the company is currently facing an investigation in Europe. It has been announced that the most searched word in Microsoft’s search engine Bing is “Google.”
Google is the most popular search term on Bing
This week, a lawyer for Google’s parent company Alphabet presented evidence in the EU’s General Court that shows that the most-used search term on Bing is “Google.”
This is Google’s main angle in the lawsuit: that its users chose to use Google Search rather than rivals, not because it was the default option on their devices.
“We have submitted evidence showing that the most common search query on Bing is by far Google. People use Google because they choose to, not because they are forced to. Google’s market share in general search is consistent with consumer surveys showing that 95% of users prefer Google to rival search engines,” said Alphabet Inc lawyer, Alfonso Lamadrid.
Bing is Microsoft’s search engine, which is also the default choice for its Edge browser and Windows, the world’s most popular desktop operating system. The EU claimed that Google “unfairly” used Android devices’ default search engine to push out rivals by making it the default option. Google is facing a $5 billion fine right now.
