Leica cameras, in addition to having a worldwide prestige over decades, have become a hallmark of Huawei phones. This collaboration has resulted in some of the best mobile cameras ever. Now this collaboration is not only going to end but could be replicated in its great rival.
Having a renowned photography brand in the phone’s camera module has become essential for many manufacturers, who have seen how it is easier to create a more prestigious brand image with these collaborations. It has been the case for Huawei for years, although it seems that this collaboration will come to an end.
The collaboration agreement between the Chinese firm and Leica debuted with the Huawei P9 several years ago, and in fact, became the first major collaboration of this type. Now information coming out of China suggests that this collaboration is coming to an end for obvious reasons, and the now expiring contract between the two companies will not be renewed.
It seems that the photography firm would not be happy with the evolution of the Chinese firm worldwide and its decreasing popularity as a result of the vetoes. So the next Huawei P50 would be the least mobile of the Chinese manufacturer to have the brand’s logo inscribed on its module.
Xiaomi, on the prowl
And here comes what would undoubtedly be an unexpected turn of events, since the non-renewal of this agreement makes Leica the great object of desire of several manufacturers. And in this struggle to have the German brand would be better positioned Xiaomi, the Chinese firm that so far has not added one of these recognized names to its cameras. There are other candidates such as Sharp or Gionee, although everything points to Xiaomi being the one to take the cat out of the water.
If so, it would not be until next year when we see the Leica logo on the cameras of Xiaomi cell phones. It would certainly be a huge coup for Xiaomi, which would have a prestigious brand and would steal it from its most direct rival until recently. Huawei after the vetoes and the very low sales is no longer a focus of attention for such collaborations. As popular wisdom reminds us, this could be summed up as Huawei as that skinny dog to which everything turns to fleas and Xiaomi as the one who fishes in troubled waters.
