On Star Wars Day, Disney unveiled its “real” lightsaber in a very short video that delighted more than one fan of the saga.
There’s more speculation than reality about this Star Wars saber, but it’s hopeful nonetheless. Apparently:
- It doesn’t need some plastic prop blade.
- It does have a retractable light, which extends from the hilt.
- Its power source is self-contained.
The Verge cites several sources who explain, based on Disney’s patent applications, what the lightsaber’s mechanism would look like.
“The beam works almost like a modified, motorized ribbon, retracting and extending an LED light to mimic the effect of ignition,” the website notes.
On-sale date and possible cost of the “real” Star Wars lightsaber
When could they be purchased, where, and at what price? Let’s take it one step at a time.
According to The Verge, the new sabers would be found in Disney’s upcoming Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser hotel. They are expected to be available by 2022.
This hotel will be part of Galaxy’s Edge park and will feature a two-night interactive Star Wars adventure in the style of Westworld.
Walt Disney Imagineering Research and Development is in charge of improving the lightsabers, and they will possibly be perfected by the time the hotel opens.
The price? More than the $200 price tag for the “regular” lightsabers in Galaxy’s Edge. With these being much more realistic, they’ll possibly be worth what they’re asking.
A sentiment that grows with each generation
Every May 4th is celebrated as Star Wars Day, alluding to the phrase “May the force be with you” (May The Fourth). From the hand of George Lucas, the star saga has dazzled generations with its stories of companionship, struggle, humor, and drama.
The Force refers to the metaphysical, luminous energy field, driven by wisdom, nobility, and justice as opposed to the Dark Side, generated by anger, fear, and hatred. While the Force is utilized by the Jedi, the Dark Side is proper to the Sith.
Beyond the screens, all kinds of merchandise can be seen regarding Lucas’ story, including sneakers and the well-known sabers. Different series, such as The Simpsons, use Star Wars references.
