Tencent and Sony were the gaming companies with the highest revenue in 2020. Despite 2020 being a difficult year for many industries, the video game industry was one of the few to benefit from the confinement. With more people locked up looking for something to spend their time on, companies saw their revenues increase thanks to the growing sales of their games, consoles, and digital content.

Tencent and Sony were the winners of the 2020

Daniel Ahmad, an analyst, shared on Twitter a list of the five video game companies with the highest revenue in 2020. According to his data, the Chinese entertainment giant, Tencent has made more than $29.3B dollars. However, he points out that these figures included the profits generated by the company’s social network businesses and not only video games.

People keep asking me what the top public video game companies are by revenue for calendar year 2020.

Here are the top 5:

Tencent – $29.30bn
Sony – $22.67bn
Nintendo – $15.79bn
Microsoft – $13.83bn
NetEase – $8.37bn

Includes game related revenue only. 1/3

In second place we see Sony, which, together with the sales of its games, consoles, and services, published revenues equivalent to $22.67B. This was followed by Nintendo with a lower but equally positive performance that resulted in $15.79B in revenue.

Gaming companies took advantage of the pandemic

The other two companies that make up its list are Microsoft and NetEase. Respectively, each obtained revenues of $13.83 billion and $8.37 billion, although the different model of each of the companies stands out: while Microsoft manufactures consoles and sells games like Sony and Nintendo, NetEase has a similar profile to Tencent and markets both online games for PCs and mobile phones as well as online services.

Although the figures offered by Ahmad are not official, it is clear to us that both Tencent and Sony had an incredible financial performance in 2020.
