For several decades now, cell phone companies have been partnering with veteran photography brands to improve the quality of the cameras in their phones. This trend was started by Nokia with its agreement with Carl Zeiss and has been taken to the extreme by Huawei with Leica.
Now OnePlus joins the trend, which today confirmed the agreement with Hasselblad that had been rumored for several weeks.
Hasselblad’s strong investment in photography
According to the Chinese company, the agreement with the Swedish firm Hasselblad will be for three years and they are committed to investing $150 million in that time only to improve the photographic performance of their smartphones.
The first result of this agreement is the Hasselblad Camera for the Mobile system that will debut on the OnePlus 9 that will be official soon.
According to Pete Lau, one of the founders of OnePlus, “With OnePlus’ world-class hardware, OnePlus’ computational photography and Hasselblad’s rich aesthetic knowledge in traditional photography, we are confident that the OnePlus 9 family will be a major step forward in our ability to deliver a premium flagship camera.”
The collaboration starts with improving color adjustment and sensor calibration, and will later extend to other parameters.
OnePlus 9 launch date
In the same announcement, OnePlus has confirmed that its new high-end family will be official next March 23.
The only confirmed feature is that the OnePlus 9 family will feature a custom Sony IMX789 sensor. We will have 12-bit RAW editing, enhanced HDR video recording, and support for capturing 4K video at 120fps and 8K video at 30fps.
We will know everything about these new phones and their cameras on March 23rd.
