Recently, after the balance of the last quarter of last year in terms of the volume of use of computer operating systems, Chrome OS was surprised by appearing as the second most used operating system on these computers.

This data was revealed through a report by BusinessWire, which analyzes the outlook for the last quarter of 2020 around laptops and their applications for work and play.

According to the report, the laptop industry managed to rebound during the last quarter. This increase in demand for these devices is based on the well-known and previously mentioned context triggered by the pandemic. Already at the end of the year, teleworking and confinements became an assumed reality that was patented in the reconfiguration of certain routines and habits, which can be patented thanks to indicators such as this increase in computer consumption.

Historically, after Windows, macOS used to be in second place in preferences, followed by some Linux distributions and other “alternative” operating systems. Today, in this new scenario, Chrome OS burst into second place.

In terms of shipments of computers with Google’s operating system preloaded, year-on-year growth was 86%; While the overall market share captured by Chrome OS reached 16.4% in the last quarter of the year.

Although Apple’s market strategy has slightly and gradually expanded its target audience, its niche has always been high-end devices. Even with years of tradition behind it and a captive community of followers, the figures show that the proposal behind Chrome OS has been more deeply rooted during these times of global emergency.

As this is the first report that shows this trend and that has such repercussions, there are still no known replicas from any of the actors involved. However, considering the context and the known background, this scenario was surely already foreseen by the companies involved and could be considered when planning future strategies.

For simple tasks such as Internet browsing, the use of various communication tools, online collaboration for the creation of documents, and, in general, to take advantage of all the benefits offered by working from the cloud, Chromebooks and, in particular, Chrome OS, became one of the best alternatives to catch up with this new digital routine, which to this day continues to set the daily standard for many people.
